The Hawks are going to be a solid team in the EC this season. Adding a good PG from the 2009 NBA Draft [i.e. Jeff Teague], a multi-purpose Guard [i.e. Jamal Crawford] and a serviceable veteran Big [i.e. Joe Smith] improves their squad significantly; as does 1 more year of maturation with their core group [i.e. Joe Johnson, 28; Al Horford, 23; Josh Smith, 23; and, Marvin Williams, 23] together. The individual match-up advantages favour Atlanta … which will probably mean another road loss for the Raptors, in this back-2-back.

Raptors expected W-L Record: L, 7-13

PS. This marks the end of the “early season” phase for the Raptors.

Expect the Hawks to be improved this season

Friday, September 11th, 2009

In line with what you saw here earlier this week …

re: How the Eastern Conference looks for ’09-10, based on individual player ratings, by position

comes this revealing piece today on the Atlanta Hawks 2009 1st Round Draft Pick/No. 19 [overall], Jeff Teague [PG], and Back-up Center, Randolph Morris.

When players are made
“He’s going to make things really interesting,” said Hawks forward Marvin Williams, a Tar Heel not prone to praising a Demon Deacon. “I just love that he’s been here all this time. It’s a clear indicator of where his mind is in terms of what he has to do this season. That’s the kind of attitude you want to see in a rookie or anybody else when they are coming into a new team. Plus, I feel like basketball players are made in the summer time. That’s when people are relaxing and doing whatever. The guys that put in the work in the summer time, that’s when it really shows in the season. Because the truth is you don’t really have time to work on your individual game as much as you’d like to during the season. And everybody can tell who’s done the work and who hasn’t. Jeff Teague has done the work.”

Those around the Association anticipating a shift “downward” this season, in the fortunes of the Hawks … primarily because they did not go out and sign a high end, big ticket free agent, e.g. like the Toronto Raptors/Hedo Turkoglu … might be in for a rude awakening.

If Mike Woodson can continue to improve, as a still-maturing head coach, and the Hawks can remain healthy, this should play out as their best season in Atlanta since 1997-1998.
