Scott G,

1. Thanks for catching the original omission of Caron Butler on my part! It is now corrected. :-)

2. I agree with your take on what this trade actually does for the Clippers and the Hornets.

3. I also agree with your take that the original trade which the Lakers proposed to the Hornets would have been BAD for both LA and New Orleans.

Nice analysis, as usual. Think you may have left off Caron Butler as a Clip, but I think he's well past his prime and they overpaid, so it just gives more fuel to your argument.

I had the same discussion with a friend last night -- Griffin is still a few years away from being able to really compete for a championship, and the pieces they have, even assuming Paul stays healthy, will mostly be well past their sell-by date at that point. I too think CP3 is being vastly overvalued because of his stellar performance against an ancient Derek Fisher on the playoff stage last year.

To me, this kind of trade is exactly why the Clips are the Clips. They had a great nucleus of young talent going (their overpayment for Jordan notwithstanding), plus what will likely be a good pick in a deep draft this coming year, and they blow it all up in one fell swoop, keeping the one guy (Bledsoe) that I think is good but not the same talent level as Gordon or Aminu. Sure, they'll be much better this year, but still not good enough to compete for the conference title, and with much more limited upside and flexibility going forward.

Once Okafor and Kaman come off the books (or are flipped into other young assets by trading them to contenders in need of a quick boost), the Hornets are in a pretty good spot, assuming they use their picks next year effectively.

I like this trade MUCH better for the Hornets than the deal that got vetoed, although that group of players would have resulted in more wins THIS season for NOH. Incidentally, I hated that deal for the Lakers, too.
