How the Raptors can steal a game from the Mavericks

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

If Dirk Nowitzki is unavailable for Dallas this evening … and the Raptors actually want to give themselves the best chance possible to steal a road game against the Mavericks, then, Toronto would be best served by using their available players in the following way:

i. Nullify the Mavericks’ advantage on the boards;

ii. Use their personnel at already familiar positions;

and, in the process,

iii. Limit their turnovers in a relatively ”high” Total Possessions up-tempo game.

KSS Prognostication

Dallas will have a significant advantage on the boards and should gradually be able to wear down Toronto … who will be playing with a depleted rotation in the 2nd half of a back-to-back. Although 12.5 points might seem like a lot to give up when the Mavericks might also be playing without their captain, Dallas should still have enough offensive firepower and defensive moxy to win this game by a wide enough margin to get the cover.

KSS Prognostication

Although this game is the 2nd half of an away/home back-to-back for the Grizzlies, the Raptors will probably be playing without several of their regular rotation players. In what should be a relatively low scoring match-up, Memphis should be able to get the W and cover the number [-6/-110], as well … as one of several KSS – NBA GOTD Selections released earlier this afternoon.

Of chefs, grocers, unhappy campers and completely missed boats

Friday, December 24th, 2010

It is truly amazing how otherwise extremely intelligent people can become wholly mis-directed when they watch and attempt to decipher correctly what has actually happened on a basketball court, concerning the success or failure of a specific team in a particular season.

——————————————————

The Person Buying the Groceries Might Be the Problem in Charlotte

Let’s summarize where I think the problem lies in Charlotte.

- Larry Brown was one of the few coaches we found to have a statistically significant impact on player performance (Brown’s impact was only significant at the 10% level).  Yes, Wallace has declined. But I am not sure that is about Brown (I am not sure why that has happened, but I don’t think it is about Brown).

- Even if Wallace had not declined, though, the Bobcats were not likely to be as good as they were last year.  This is because MJ hasn’t been able to find very many productive players.

And now we hear Jordan really wanted Brook Lopez and he might want Baron Davis. If these stories are true, that again doesn’t speak well of the talent evaluation skills of Jordan.   Remember, Jordan once drafted Kwame Brown with the first pick in the draft (a player who is once again with Jordan in Charlotte) and Adam Morrison with the 3rd pick (a player who Jordan could easily have again).  So the track record is not encouraging.  And it is this track record that leads me to think the problem in Charlotte wasn’t the person making the dinner, it was the person buying the groceries.

Let me close by saying I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and/or a Happy Holidays!!  And although Phil Jackson doesn’t want to work on Christmas, I think most NBA fans are happy he is. Jackson should also remember if he coached the Bobcats, he probably wouldn’t be working on Christmas (yes, Jackson is good, but even the Zen Master couldn’t save this collection of players).  But then — like Larry Brown (and now Paul Silas) — Jackson would have other issues to worry about.

- DJ

——————————————————

Larry Brown has been a very successful basketball coach over the course of his Hall Of Fame career.

Last season, Larry Brown did a terrific job coaching the Charlotte Bobcats to their first ever playoff appearance, by putting his players in the best possible position to accentuate their individual – and, therefore, collective – strengths while, simultaneously, minimizing their respective weaknesses.

This season, however, Larry Brown stopped doing that … primarily because the cast of players at his disposal was no longer to his liking … and by Game 28 on the Bobcats’ schedule had, instead, become a major factor behind the poor performance of the players on this team, many of whom were no longer listening to what he had to say as their head coach.

Responsibility for what has happened with the Charlotte Bobcats, so far, this season, lies with the following individuals, in this specific order:

1. Michael Jordan, i.e. the person who pays for the groceries;

2. Rod Higgins, i.e. the person who buys the groceries;

3. Larry Brown [and his coaching staff], i.e. the cook who makes the meals;

4. The Leaders amongst their collection of 14 players, i.e. the primary consumers of the meals;

5. The Followers amongst their collection of 14 players, i.e. the secondary consumers of the meals.

The operation of a successful NBA franchise is based upon a “top down” leadership model with 5 specific levels.

Hopefully, Michael Jordan’s recent decision to replace Larry Brown – i.e. the embodiment of an ‘unhappy camper‘ – with Paul Silas – i.e. the embodiment of a ‘happy camper‘ – will mean that the Bobcats have now found a head coach who is more in tune with the specific strengths and weaknesses of the individual players on THIS TEAM, for THIS SEASON and beyond.

Each year in the NBA is different from those which have preceded it.

Unless a team has the right coach … who is actually the ‘right fit’ for its specific collection of players … it has zero chance of reaching its ‘maximum capacity’.

Silas strikes right note to begin 2nd tenure with Charlotte

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Paul Silas is off to a solid start as the new old head coach for the Bobcats.

——————————————————-

Silas says Bobcats will play up-tempo style game

Paul Silas’ first practice as the new interim coach of the Charlotte Bobcats Thursday had one noteworthy twist.

Instead of practicing with a 24-second shot clock, the Bobcats worked with a 14-second shot clock.

It’s all part of Silas’ plan to play up-tempo basketball—a stark contrast to the style of his predecessor, Larry Brown, who was fired on Wednesday.

“I want to bring some energy to this ball club,” Silas said after being introduced as the fourth head coach in franchise history. “I want us to get up and down and let it all hang out. If they don’t want to get up and down, they can come sit down by me.”

The Bobcats currently rank 29th in the NBA in scoring, averaging 91.7 points a game. Only Milwaukee is averaging fewer points. The Bobcats have averaged just 80.2 points during their current four-game losing streak and have not scored 100 since beating Denver 100-98 on Dec. 7.

“We’ve got shooters,” Silas said. “We’ve got defenders. We’ve got shot blockers. We’ve got all the ingredients that you need. The guys just have to get out and play and believe in themselves and believe that I believe in them. I’ve found that if you have a confident player, it’s unbelievable what he can do.”

Guard Stephen Jackson(notes) welcomed the commitment to playing up tempo.

“It’s rejuvenating,” Jackson said. “The styles are like night and day. Hopefully this will bring some life to us and give us some confidence and get us playing well again. Up-tempo, we’ve got a great group of young guys and this fits their style. Hopefully we can do a good job at it and enjoy it because it’s definitely fun.”

it’s the right decision for Charlotte to shift to an up-tempo game that can increase the Minutes Played for talented but, thus far, under-utilized youngsters like Tyrus Thomas, Domenic McGuire, DJ Augustin, Derrick Brown and Gerald Henderson.

The collection of players on the Bobcats’ roster at-present is not good enough to contend for a Top 4 spot in the Eastern Conference this season.

Exhibit A

Detroit Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks: Where’s Your JOD Now?

Atlanta Hawks: 16-9 (8-4 road)

Detroit Pistons: 7-18 (5-6 home)

UPDATE — Greg Monroe will start at Power Forward tonight. (via pistonpowered, thanks dan!)

 Oppo Research:

A quick look at the Atlanta Hawks team will tell you they’re precisely the kind of team that just seems to have the Pistons number this year– by that I mean that they play in the NBA.  Seriously, though, the Hawks are 11-3 against teams with losing records, they’ve won 8 of their last 10 and they’re 8-4 on the road.  While they haven’t won in Detroit since MC was AFI, they’ll look to do so tonight against a collapsing frustrating dying maddening faltering Pistons team.

This season, the Hawks best player has been the newly-resigned Al Horford (who apparently hasn’t gotten the “only play well in your contract year, dummy” memo).  In December, he’s averaging 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a block in 36 minutes of play.  Per 36, that’s 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a block!!  It sure doesn’t hurt the Hawks that Horford is flanked by Josh Smith, who is playing through a hamstring booboo to the tune of 17 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in December.  This is a nasty frontcourt, a solid defensive duo who will give plenty of problems to slashing guards and post bigs alike.  The last time these teams met, this duo went up for 40 points, 19 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks on a collective 67% shooting from the field.

Fortunately for the Pistons, Atlanta will be without the league’s most expensive player tonight, Mr. Joe Johnson, who was pretty ineffective the last time around.  Fortunately for the Hawks, they’ll have Jamal Crawford to fill that hole, who has done so quite well in scoring at least 20 in the last three games.

Keys to the Game:

Team Cohesion:  This team can play well if properly coached, and one result of which, of course, is playing better as a group … i.e. to play as a cohesive unit to perform better than their abilities.  Anyone with incestual basketball acumen can notice this, only toxic-group think fans would not realize this.

Three Guard Lineup: Novice basketball fans would think that the Detroit Pistons of Auburn Hills have a problem with the guards on their roster when, in fact, it is only because they are not properly being used … specifically, as they should be ran as a three guard lineup.  Playing time should be split between Mr. Stuckey at PG, Mr. Hamilton at OG, with Ben Gordon used as a primary backup at PG while the young Austin Daye is split between responsibilities at OG and SF.

Elite Level Coaching:  Mr. Kuester can be considered a poor (or bad) coach i.e. one who doesn’t properly use the players in his command, but a change in how he manages his players could … lead to more wins for the Pistons.  I recall my close friend Hubie Brown, whose home phone number is displayed conveniently with a locket of his hair in front of the desk in my mom’s basement from where I operate … who is surely an elite level coach and understands my command of basketball intelligence and acumen thereof, to wit, of course, etc., and on.  If Mr. Kuester can take time to study the great minds of NBA basketball, of Brown (Hubie AND Larry), of Jackson, of Kandor, of Sloan … he will realize the ill fate to which he has set up this incorigable, toilsum and fornicaterous band of underperformers … i.e. the Pistons roster, to a level of infamy where they may discover themselves in the playoffs.

1.  A great director of film, like Kubric, Scorcese and the guy who did Paul Blart: Mall Cop … can take any manner of poor actors and lead them to perform admirably on film, that is in front of the camera and not behind or beside it, to craft a masterpiece theater of sorts that astute and knowledgeable people (i.e. not uneducated or simple) will appreciate … and the film will thereby succeed.

1b.  A poor director, such as David Lynch (who is Mr. Lynch kidding, Dennis Hopper was terrible at portraying a baby in Blue Velvet, it just wasn’t believable), Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai would have been so much better if filmed properly in color and not black and white), or the guy who did Toy Stories 1 through 3, will achieve bad performances out of good actors.  This is precisely the style of Mr. Kuester, for example, thereof, doubly so, duckbill platypus, who achieves the same out of a cast of decent players that make up the Pistons roster.

2.  People who think that advanced stats, like points per game, should suggest how to properly coach … i.e. stand on the sidelines and look angry when team plays bad, are novices in the world of a smart basketball acuman like Hubie Brown or myself.  A wise and smart basketball person’s gut … i.e. their instinks, don’t need to look at confusing numbers like minutes per game to know how much a player has played in each game per year.  They just know.

3.  How many times has John Kuester had his work referenced on the great ESPN, bastion of intelligent minds of basketball like Simmons, like Sheriden, et. al. i.e. etc., where the truly gifted may link to crappy wordpress blogs?

Question of the Game:

Kuester has been quoted as considering another lineup change, possibly cutting the depth of his rotations even more.  If he cuts a player from the rotation, who will it be now?  (assuming Daye and Bynum are already out)

——————————————————-

Exhibit B

Hornets v. Pistons Game Recap

Why the Pistons Prevailed

It came to my attention, while perusing the box score of the contest between the Detroit Pistons and the visiting New Orleans Hornets … that the unusual degree of Team Cohesion exhibited by the victorious Squad — viz., the Pistons — could be attributed to one Factor and one Factor ONLY: a Three-Guard Rotation, the Scheme employed by Elite-Level Coaches with Elite-Level Basketball Acumen. The particular Three-Guard Rotation demonstrated by John Kuester, coach of the Pistons side, consisted of the following Three Guards:

[i] Tracy McGrady, OG, also referred to as T-Mac;

[ii] Ben Gordon, OG; and

[iii] Will Bynum, PG.

While most Three-Guard Rotations include a starting PG, said Rotation did not, an inconsistency that caused me no end of Vexation … until I read the game Recap — at which time all was made clear, containing as it did the VITAL information relating to the injury-caused absences of Rodney Stuckey, PG; and Richard Hamilton, OG, also referred to as “Rip”. Speaking as an Elite-Level Medical Expert with a High-Percentage Knowledge Base of Doctorological Acumen, I became once again rather surprised … having not previously to tonight’s Game heard anything — in my Lair — that either Rodney Stuckey, PG; or Richard Hamilton, OG, also referred to as “Rip”; were ailing, or suffering from any unusual Maladies, such as a torn ACL, for which they could have simply opted to wear a knee brace, then subsequently choosing to test their knees, perhaps in a basketball game, the results — of which — would determine if they were indeed physically able to Partake in a full-contact, full-length game of basketball at the Highest Level of Basketball Competition, Professionally Speaking, and I do not hesitate to specify, the Competition that I refer to — thusly — is a game in the NBA.

All of the above factors given Due Consideration, I arrived at not one, and not three, or any higher number, such as Eleven, but two [2] conclusions, or should I say, THEOREMS, that could possibly … account for, or explain … the Three-Guard Rotation implemented by the Detroit Pistons in their contest — rather, their Competition on the Highest Level of Basketball Endeavour — against the New Orleans Hornets, the two Explanations being … I proclaim … the Explanations enumerated herein, below the current paragraph, which you are now reading — with your eyes, and possibly, but not definitively, with the aid of Spectacles, Contact lenses, or perhaps LASIK Surgery, which has been reputed to restore one’s vision, not necessarily one’s Court Vision — for that is dependent on not only one’s Visual Acuity, but also one’s Basketball Acumen, and the degree of Eliteness that has, in one’s years participating in the Game, ACCRUED to it, i.e., one’s Acumen in Matters Basketball-Related and -Encompassing.

The Two, without further ado, Explanations:

Are:

The following:

None but:

[i] Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester, he who has been tasked nigh Two Years Now, of coaching, directing, and otherwise managing the Basketball activities of the Pistons of the city of Detroit of the state of Michigan of the country of the United States, which is the country due south of Canada, as many will agree but I was the first — [1st] — to point out — this same Kuester has grown into a rather remarkable Basketball Analyst, a level of Achievement sure to affect one’s Performance in a closely-related Arena such as Basketball Coaching — and his newly-acquired analytical Acumen led him to conclude, as others but … especially I … none other than myself … have previously concluded — as True Experthood does not consist of mere Originality — but instead of having the courage to point out things before they appear Obvious to others — that a Three-Guard Rotation, consisting of two guards who appear in the Starting Lineup and another, typically an OG, but also possibly, and more rarely, a PG — who appears not in the starting lineup, but comes off the Bench to substitute for one of the two Starting guards, so that at any given time, two Guards are present on the court for said team, and one rests on the bench, in a rotation-like fashion, hence the Basketball term known as ROTATION, which I most certainly coined, … — e.g., Originated and Developed, not formed out of metals, alloys, and the suchlike as a Literal Coin, but Coined in the sense of Invented a Term, or a Word … and having reached this Decision, Detroit Pistons Coach John Kuester politely requested that two of the several guards on the Detroit Pistons Roster, namely Rodney Stuckey, PG; and Richard Hamilton, OG, also referred to as “Rip”; would not play in the game against the Hornets of the city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana, which formerly belonged to the Louisiana Territory, which is another word for Area, a Linguistic Concept known as, and occasionally referred to, as a Synonym, meaning Same Name in the Original Greek, which is the language spoken in the Country of Greece.

or:

[ii] The guards mentioned thricely above, in particular, Rodney Stuckey, PG; and Richard Hamilton, OG, also referred to as “Rip”; were actually ailing, despite all indications to the contrary, and their Decision of Declination of Participation in said Competition against the Louisiana-Originating Hornets, was indeed due to illness, in which case, the Acumen that seemed to be Demonstrated by Pistons Coach John Kuester was not indeed said Acumen after all … but … instead, was forced upon him by the illness of the Guards Mentioned now four times, in which case, I do not hesitate to call to the attention of you, my reader, and both of your eyes, or possibly just one [1] eye, should any of my readers be Pirates or otherwise visually impaired, which certainly could have happened to some of you, in addition to vision, assisting devices such as Glasses, Contact Lenses, and sundry other possible appliances — or Implements — and were all of the foregoing actually Proven to Be Correct, the victory of the Detroit squad over the team from New Orleans, in Louisiana, could not be Accurately Attributed to the Acumen and Acuity of John Kuester, which has been … in rather Short Supply lately … but instead due to Fate, Chance — the random Variety — in the event of which the Pistons should expect to succeed when Two of their Guards are sick, leaving Three and only Three, not more or less than Three, to converge into an Elite-Level — conceptually speaking — Three-Guard Rotation, but in all other cases the Pistons can be expected to LOSE.

[iii] A Third Possibility may come to mind later, in which case I will Edit it into my weblog. You will be kept apprised of any such Developments.

Thank you for your Attention — American Idiom

Unlike other franchices in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs actually know what they are doing

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

If you’re a regular reader of this blog then you should already be quite familiar with the utmost level of R.E.S.P.E.C.T yours truly has for the best run organization in the NBA:

Kudos to Peter Holt, Gregg Popovich, RC Buford & Co. for:

- the discovery of Gary Neal [OG/SF]
- the decision to insert DeJuan Blair [PF] into the Starting Five beside Timmy D [C]
- the decision to stick with Richard Jefferson [SF] this past off season … and keep him in the 1st unit … when many other so-called NBA analysts were advising you to jettison him, asap
- the decision to stick with Tony Parker [PG] this past off season when many other so-called NBA analysts were advising you to trade him away in return for other assets in order to re-stock your cupboard for the future
- the decision to reduce the minutes allocated on a nightly basis to Timmy D [C], who remains one of the best players in the NBA
- the decision to use Manu Ginobili [OG/SF], as the Starting Off Guard
- the decision to keep George Hill [PG] in the 2nd unit, as the heir apparent to TP
- the decision to selection James Anderson [SF], as the Big 12 POY, with the No. 20 Selection in the 1st Round of the 2010 NBA Draft
- the decision to shift Matt Bonner [PF] to the 2nd unit, as the team’s top perimeter shooting Big Man
- the decision to shift Antonio McDyess [C] to the 2nd unit, as the team’s best mid-range shooting Big Man
- the decision to gradually add Tiago Splitter [C] into the mix this season, as a part-time role player who is going to be a very solid replacement for Timmy D down-the-road
- making the following list of player personnel decisions, in the month of November, which involved Garrett Temple, Alonzo Gee, Bobby Simmons, Danny Green, Ume Idoka and Chris Quinn

While other franchises in the NBA, either:

A. Languish forever in the lowest tier of the league;

or,

B. Are semi-permanetly entrenched in its middle tier, as a Treadmill Team;

… It is simply a joy to watch this outfit Go To Work! … 24-7-365.

Where the Pistons re-vamped rotation dismantled the Raptors

As was mentioned here yesterday …

If John Kuester is not going to settle on a specific rotation for the Pistons this year, then, Detroit will most likely drop to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

However, it would be a serious mistake in Basketball Judgment for anyone to think that the chief reason for this type of precipitous decline in the fortunes of this franchise is due to the overall poor quality of the players on their present roster.

Detroit Pistons [10-19] 115
TORONTO RAPTORS [10-19] 93
Complete Game Info

Despite the fact that the Raptors went into last night’s game with a depleted line-up …

Jerryd Bayless [Out - illness]
Sonny Weems [Out - injured]
Peja Stojakovic [Out - injured]
Reggie Evans [Out - injured]

and were forced to use already-injured starters Jose Calderon [PG] and Andrea Bargnani [C] for copious amounts of minutes – even though they were both playing poorly - and were forced to play the final 26:43 without the services of their starting PF, Amir Johnson [who sufferred a re-occurrence of his on-going trouble with back spasms] …

The specific rotation which the Pistons used in this game is but one example of what can happen when a team’s players have a solid understanding of their respective individual roles, and their head coach uses them in combinations that actually make a good deal of sense from an Individual Match-up perspective.

If you take a look at the “Substitution Chart” from last night’s game:

Kudos to John Kuester. :-)

As long as John Kuester refuses to develop a consistent 8 or 9 player rotation for this team, there is no longer any reason to believe that Detroit might actually have what it takes to compete effectively for a lower tier playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

Considering:

1. The Pistons’ W-L Record, since Game 22 …

Game # – Results [W-L Rec, Game 22-41; W-L Rec, 2010-2011]

Game 22 – L, @ HOUSTON, 83-97 [0-1; 7-15]
Game 23 – L, @ NEW ORLEANS, 74-93 [0-2; 7-16]
Game 24 – L, @ MINNESOTA, 99-109 [0-3; 7-17]
Game 25 – L, vs Toronto, 116-120 [0-4; 7-18]
———————————–
Game 26 – W, vs Atlanta, 103-80 [1-4; 8-18]
———————————–
Game 27 – L, vs LA Clippers, 88-109 [1-5; 8-19]
Game 28 – W, vs New Orleans, 111-108 OT [2-5; 9-19];

2. The probable outcomes for their games between today and the mid-point of the regular season schedule:

Game 29 – L-?, @ TORONTO [2-6; 9-20]
Game 30: L-?, vs Chicago [2-7; 9-21]
Game 31: L-?, @ CHARLOTTE [2-8; 9-22]
Game 32: L-? @ BOSTON [2-9; 9-23]
Game 33: L-?, @ PHOENIX [2-10; 9-24]
Game 34: L-?, @ UTAH [2-11; 9-25]
Game 35: L-?, @ LA LAKERS [2-12; 9-26]
Game 36: W-?, vs Philadelphia [3-12; 10-26]
Game 37: L-?, @ Chicago [3-13; 10-27]
Game 38: L-?, vs Memphis [3-14; 10-28]
Game 39: L-?, @ TORONTO [3-15; 10-29]
Game 40: W-?, vs Sacramento [4-15; 11-29]
Game 41: L-?, @ BOSTON [4-16; 11-30];

3. The recent turmoil surrounding Rip Hamilton;

and,

4. The following almost unbelievable quote from Coach Kuester:

“He was cramping up and didn’t want to come out. I was so proud of the way he competed the whole time.”

regarding his “positive” impression of the so-called “work” put in by Charlie Villanueva … a ridiculously poor defender, intermittent rebounder and, in general, irresponsible chucker … in Detroit’s win over New Orleans;

there is now a strong possibility that the Pistons will eventually finish in one of the bottom two positions in the East this year … and, in the process, secure the rights to one of the high selections in the 2011 NBA Draft Lottery.

Once this happens, however, and Karen Davidson is able to sell the team, then, the Pistons should at least be in a decent position to gradually work their way back up the standings … with a group of fairly talented youngsters on-board already, including Rodney Stuckey, Jonas Jerebko, Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers and Greg Monroe … the addition of a top tier selection in the upcoming draft, and the hiring of a new head coach who actually knows what he’s doing, as an elite level practicioner.

How Rick Adelman used individual match-ups to get a road W for Houston

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

If you look at the straight-forward results for last night’s game between the Rockets and the Warriors:

Houston Rockets 121
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS 112
Complete Game Info

what you might notice right away is that:

1. Monta Ellis scored 44 points to keep Golden State within striking distance of Houston for the majority of the game;

2. Kevin Martin led the Rockets in scoring with 30 points;

and,

3. Luis Scola had a terrific all-around game for Houston, scoring 20 points and collecting 9 rebounds with 6 assists.

However …

What you might NOT notice right away … unless, of course, if you actually take the time to watch the game AND then:

i. Break it down, possession by possession, with the benefit of:
