Raptors half-way through their first 20 games

Toronto [5-5] has now reached the 10 game mark of the regular season schedule.

For those of you keeping track, these were the suggested outcomes that were listed here in September [approximately 1 month in advance] for the team’s first 20 games this season, from the perspective of an astute NBA observer:

It will be very interesting to see how the next 10 games play out for the Raptors … especially, now that Antawn Jamison is set to return to the line-up [Wed Nov 18 vs Cleveland] for the Wizards [2-7] and Charlotte [3-6]  acquired Stephen Jackson early today.

I had called a 5-5 record, but miss called the memphis and new orleans games. Click my name above for the link to the article.

If the Bobcats don’t turn around and trade Jackson, they will probably make a run at the 8th spot. Don’t see them much higher though, if that.

  2. khandor Says:

    Raps Fan,

Seems as though we were in agreement on most of the games in the Raptors first 13.

Where the difference comes, however, is in Games #14-20.

In advance, you saw the Raptors being able to go 5-2 in these specific games; whereas, IMO, an astute observer would have actually expected to see them go 2-5 during this same stretch.

It is going to be interesting to see if either one of us actually turns out to be correct.

  3. Raps Fan Says:

I have to admit, I was much more confident in my predictions on the first 10 games, then the rest. 2-5 is a REAL possibility during that stretch of games, especially with Jackson in Charlotte. That team becomes a dark horse for the 8th seed imho if they don’t trade him elsewhere.

  4. khandor Says:

    Raps Fan,

As I’ve said since the early days of the summer …

This is shaping up to be a hum-dinger of a season in the NBA with a whole swack of teams in the hunt for the playoffs.

Q1. Are the Raptors in the mix?
    A1. Yes, they should be.

Q2. Are the Raptors a certainty to qualify for the playoffs?
A2. Unfortunately, not by a long stretch.

[which doesn't mean just yet that I actually think they won't make the Top 8 in the conference this season, only that given the depth of the middle-of-the-pack teams this year, it's WAY too early to make that call with any degree of accuracy, given how little the Raptors have actually improved, overall, in comparison with last season, relative to the other teams in the league]
