Deal or No Deal? … You make the call for the Raptors
This is Michael Grange’s [From Deep] blog entry from January 8, 2009:
Almost one full month later …
——————————————–
If the following two trade options were presented to you:
——————————————–
Trade Option #1 or Trade Option #2
In my book, it’s NOT EVEN CLOSE.
A TOP NOTCH General Manager, in the NBA, would go for Trade Option #2, then:
* Keep Anthony Roberson
* Buy out Stephon Marbury
* Trade Jason Kapono [for a serviceable Big, while Humphries is out, or a useful Wing player]
* Trade or release Will Solomon
AND go shopping this summer for the type of complementary players that the Raptors NEED to surround Chris Bosh, Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani, in order to resume their gradual climb up the Eastern Conference Standings next season and beyond, building on the Lottery Pick they are now in line for this year.

All this is fine and dandy… but does D’Antoni really want JO? He’s not exactly a fast-break type of player.
That aside, I think it’s worth mentioning the determining factor in the evaluation of those two trades - Marcus Banks’ BAD contract. Wait… who would sign a player like him to THAT deal?? oh, crap…
that signing was eerily reminiscent of the Kapono deal, IMO - get the guy you THINK you want, overpay despite no bidding competition, then find out he’s no good.

Scott G,
As a back-up Center in support of David Lee, adding Jermaine O’Neal might just make some sense for the Knicks, on at least three fronts:
1. They rid themselves of Starbury.
2. They will make the playoffs this season.
3. O’Neal’s contract isn’t a long term albatross for their team going forward.

re: signings like Marcus Banks & Jason Kapono
The media spotlight in Toronto which has neglected to highlight some of the atrocious moves which Bryan Colangelo has made thus far in his NBA career as a “respected” executive is, in part, what has led to this current situation for the Raptors.
IMO, Richard Peddie & Co. did NOT do their due diligence correctly when they decided to hire Mr. Colangelo to run their ship in Feb/2006 … if the goal of this franchise was really to eventually bring a NBA championship to Toronto [which I highly doubt was their primary motivation, in the first place].
THE MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS TEAM … has its source at the very top of the organization and flows downward from there in a torrent.

Marbury is gone in 3 months anyway. New York is still trying to get rid of all their monster contracts from the Thomas era and resign David Lee in the summer. So I ask this of you all, why in the hell would they want ANOTHER injury prone player with a monster contract??? They already have an injury prone big making big money. Eddy Curry ring a bell????
Riley is not an idiot, he waited until a Conference rival was good and buried in the standings before finalizing this talked about trade. His team is doing well…why fix what isn’t broke?…now he waits until the deadline, gets JO for the stretch drive…smart move…meanwhile we get Marion, and for what? 2 months? long enough to win a few games and get out of the lottery??
Neither trade makes much sense unless the Raptors can resign Marion.

At this point, getting JO off the books and getting ANY young talent in return should be seen as a win. JO’s presence is actively hurting the Raps, and he needs to be sent packing.
Having said that, I totally agree with Khan that taking on another bad contract in return only compounds the mistake of trading for this guy in the first place. Picks, expiring deals, and young players with reasonable contracts are the best we can hope for - since Zeke is gone, no GM will be stupid enough to give us any substantial immediate value in return.
